Many spares in the UAE have never touched the road yet are cracked and over age, because heat in the boot or under the car ages rubber as fast as driving does. Replacing an old spare costs far less than a tow when the main tyre fails.
Full-size spare or space-saver
A full-size spare is identical in size to your road tyres and can replace any wheel without speed limits, while a space-saver is a narrow temporary tyre usually limited to 80 km/h and short distances. Most large SUVs such as the Land Cruiser, Patrol and Prado carry a full-size spare; many sedans and crossovers carry a space-saver.
If your car has a full-size spare rim, fit a tyre of the same size and ideally the same model as the road tyres so it can join a rotation.
- Space-saver pressure is often around 60 PSI; check the label on the rim
- Never fit a space-saver on a driven axle for long distances
When a spare tyre needs replacing
Replace a spare tyre when it is more than five years past its DOT date, shows cracks in the sidewall or tread grooves, or will not hold pressure for a month. Spares mounted under the car on pick-ups and SUVs are exposed to road heat and sand, and often age faster than the tyres on the wheels.
Check the spare's pressure every time you check the others; a flat spare is the most common reason a simple puncture becomes a tow.
- Read the DOT code on the spare: e.g. "1419" is week 14 of 2019
- Tailgate-mounted spares crack fastest in direct sun
Cars that came without a spare
Many newer cars and most EVs ship with a sealant and compressor kit or run-flat tyres instead of a spare, to save weight and boot space. Sealant handles small tread punctures but cannot fix a sidewall cut or a blowout, which are common causes of roadside stops on UAE highways.
Adding a spare is possible if the boot has space and a matching rim with the correct bolt pattern, centre bore and brake clearance is available; ask us on WhatsApp to check the options for your model.
- Bolt pattern (e.g. 5x114.3) and centre bore must match
- Large brake callipers may not clear a smaller spare rim
What the spare tyre visit includes
The technician removes the old tyre from your spare rim, mounts and balances the new one, sets pressure, and returns it to its carrier. While on site, the jack, wheel brace and locking-nut adaptor are checked so the kit is complete when you need it.
The tyre is priced by size and brand, and the price is confirmed on WhatsApp before the visit.
- Old spare tyre taken for disposal
- Spare carrier cable or bolt checked on pick-ups and SUVs
Turning a spare into a fifth rotation tyre
On 4x4s with a full-size spare, buying five identical tyres and rotating all five spreads wear across an extra tyre and keeps the spare from ageing unused. This is common practice for owners who drive on sand, where a matching spare also keeps four-wheel-drive systems happy with equal rolling circumferences.
- Rotate all five every 10,000 km
- Mismatched tread depth across axles can strain AWD couplings
